The lamest major awards show in my opinion arrives Tuesday, Jan. 16 – the Golden Globes. As lousy as the Oscars, and the Emmys can be sometimes in selecting what they think is the best in movies and television respectively, the Golden Globes has them beat in terms of poor credibility. There was the instance in the early 1980s when it was found that Pia Zadora (yeah, I know what you are thinking – “Who?”) won the best newcomer award after her husband basically wined and dined the Golden Globe committee members. Prior to that, the networks discontinued televising the awards in the 1970s after there were questions about voting irregularities and who exactly were the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hands out the Globes.
Those worries apparently have been addressed by the association over the years, since NBC has been covering the show live the last few years. Still, it cannot erase the fact that the Globes have come up with some of the most ridiculous nominees ever in its annual celebration of what it regards as the best in film and TV. Does anybody really think the following examples deserved a nomination, which is exactly what the Globes gave them?
1971, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical: Dean Jones for $1,000,000 Duck
1978, Best Television Series – Drama: Starsky & Hutch
1987, Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy: Tony Danza for Who’s The Boss?
I think you get what I am saying.
As far as I can tell, the main reason why the Golden Globes thrive today is that they have an elaborate banquet for all the guests, so even if you lose, you will not leave starving. That also explains why some of the presenters appear tipsy, because they really are buzzing.
So you leaders at the Oscars and the Emmys, take my advice and dispense your awards at a ceremony with food and drinks, and you can stop the Golden Globes from hogging its unfair share of prestige and press coverage. If you fail to do so, you will only let the likes of Tony Danza earn plaudits they certainly do not deserve. Not to mention take out three hours on the NBC nighttime schedule each year. On second thought, remembering what it is on that schedule now, scratch that last complaint. But still, somebody must stop those not-so-Golden Globes now!
