Wesley's Week - July 9-15, 2007

by Wesley

Thanks to encouragement from an unlikely combination (my mother and a man who interviewed me for his Web site twice), I am going to Los Angeles this weekend to be part of the Game Show Congress. No, it is not what you are thinking – I am not the North Carolina representative who receives the power to, say, impeach Pat Sajak from hosting Wheel of Fortune. It is simply a gathering of game show enthusiasts to learn about the state of the industry as well as celebrate the past. The featured event will be a luncheon Sunday honoring Wink Martindale, which us older folk will remember best as the host of Tic Tac Dough, while the younger set may know him as the host on those Orbitz commercials.

This event started rather low-key a few years ago and now has mushroomed into becoming a huge convention with games, book signings and other activities. I had only heard about it until now, but Steve Beverly, who has interviewed me a couple of times for his excellent TVgameshow.net Web site, urged me to come out there this year several times, and when I told my mom about this foolish notion of his, she wholeheartedly endorsed it as well.

So now I am packing my bags and looking forward to meeting such notables as Betty White finally in person. I think I will carry my copy of her autobiography along with me to have her sign it, just so that I can be that cheesy irritating fan of a celebrity that I always make fun of otherwise. She is not the only celebrity planned to be there either – anybody recall Earl Holliman from Police Woman or Barbara Feldon from Get Smart, either? Well, they will be there, and I cannot wait to meet them.

I will give you a report next week on how things went once I return Monday night (yeah, I am breezing in and out of Los Angeles, which I think is probably for the best), and maybe even have some pictures to share. Wish me luck.
