“There is no such thing as bad publicity except your own obituary.” That is what Irish author and dramatist Brendan Behan had to say, but I wonder if he would apply his statement to what is happening currently with Britney Spears.
Oh, Britney, what is going on with you, honey?! You are a mess, a continuous train wreck in public, from the way you neglect your children (which will cost you custody of them for the time being) to your nonchalance about how your performing skills have slid. Your dancing and “singing” (lip syncing actually) at the VMA awards already has become a camp classic, replayed at many bars and parties as an example of how NOT to do a comeback. And yet through all this you seem blissfully unaware of what you are doing wrong in your life, including driving in California without an appropriate license.
I actually met Britney once before her big rise to fame, about 10 years ago, when she was based out of Orlando after working on The Mickey Mouse Club. She struck me as a very nice child (she offered to get a younger girl a refill on her drink) and very pleasant in dealing with the public. Remembering that person and seeing the one in public now, it is very difficult for me to reconcile the two images. That is how drastic her transformation has been for me personally.
It used to be when I saw a story about Britney, I would think, “Oh, that might be interesting to hear what is going on with her.” Now, my reaction to any story about her is “Not her again!” She keeps botching everything in her world, and nobody seems to know the exact reasons why. It has progressed beyond a bad joke into being a sad event nowadays whenever she makes the news.
Britney, if by some chance you ever read this, please be aware that while I am not impressed by you now, I have not given up on you totally. But you need to get back to the basics. Focus on your music and pay attention to your children. If you do not know how to raise them, read a book or get advice from people who have done it themselves. The music you know how to do – the problem is you keep trying to do it after drinking and partying, and that is not going to work. You should know better than that.
Get better soon, Britney – we miss you!
