Wesley’s Week (Nov. 20-26, 2006)

by Wesley

Like most of you, I love Thanksgiving, but I must admit there are certain elements connected to the holiday that I enjoy better than others. Here is a rundown of a couple of my specific likes and dislikes about this event:

Turkey – White or Dark Meat?: This is a draw, since I enjoy both kinds. However, when it comes to leftovers, I definitely prefer white meat for sandwiches with mayonnaise or mustard, and dark meat with gravy on it.

Potatoes – Mashed (or Whipped, if you call it that) or Sweet?: Mashed, thank you. I do not want anything sweet during my main meal other than perhaps a lemonade or orange juice or fountain drink.

Pie – Pumpkin or Pecan?: Pumpkin. This is odd, since my dad is a pecan man, and I usually have the same eating habits as him. Pecan is just too gooey for my taste.

Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Day Parade Coverage – CBS or NBC?: I favor NBC, but not wildly. Frankly, I am not really big on parades, but at least on NBC they give them time to perform songs and dances for the home viewing audience. I cannot really see the appeal of being there in person to watch it in New York City, given how cold it usually is there.

And finally …

“There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays” – the Perry Como version or the Carpenters one?: This is another draw. Perry Como’s version is an old-fashioned take with a bubbly chorus, corny but catchy. The Carpenters’ take is more low-key, and it is easier to hear but not as enjoyable to sing along with it as Perry’s effort. Either way, I envy that man from Tennessee going to Pennsylvania to get some pumpkin pie every time. I just hope he saves me a piece too.
