Sony has had a tough year by all accounts. Its PS3 keeps getting delayed and it is losing buzz status by the day. Its next generation DVD format Blue-Ray is sputtering because of the PS3 delay and lack of compatible players. However, today when many were talking about the announcement of the Mac Pro and yesterday’s Steve Jobs Keynote, Sony released details of a new product that is refreshing, innovative and bound to succeed. Today Sony released information about the upcoming release of Mylo , a handheld device that can play music and videos, is WiFi capable and can browse the Internet and access e-mail. What makes this device a winner? To me the biggest thing is integration. Sure hundreds of devices can play music and videos, but they can’t let you check your e-mail or chat online with no monthly contracts or service fees. The biggest break through is with out a doubt the integration of Skype. Think about it, you are a freshman on a college campus and you live in a dorm that has wireless internet and your campus has campus wide WiFi, with the Mylo you can talk to you friend anywhere for free on your Mylo which is a wireless Skype phone, you can update you blog, check your e-mail and instant message with you roommate who is getting out of class. Think about the applications. This is brilliant, but of course we will have to wait until September until it is released to really find out if it is as good as many think, but all the details so far make me very excited to see it in action.
Will this be another nail in the coffin of phone companies as another inexpensive way to make local and long distance calls? To me the really interesting thing is the marketing implications of this technology. It gives more people the opportunity to utilize the Internet on the go and to me this seems like the perfect tool for blog posting and podcast listening. Will devices like the Mylo help reinforce the validity of these mediums? We will soon find out…
